St Peter's Catholic High School is celebrating a remarkable sporting achievement after our Year 7 boys' rugby team were crowned National Champions with a superb 38-0 victory over The Deanery in the National Champion Schools Final at Wembley Stadium.
The team produced an outstanding display on the biggest stage in school rugby league, completing an incredible season in which they remained unbeaten throughout the year. Their defensive record has been equally impressive, conceding just two tries in 17 matches while scoring more than 500 points.
Adding to an unforgettable day, Blake Baggley was named Player of the Match following an outstanding performance.
The boys' achievements this season now include:
• Wigan Warriors 9-a-Side Champions
• North West Counties Champions
• Lancashire Rugby Union Champions
• National Rugby League Champions
And there is still one more trophy to play for when the team competes in the Wigan and Leigh Champion Schools Final on 22nd June.
The day at Wembley provided memories that will last a lifetime, but one moment in particular perfectly captured the spirit of the occasion.
Following Wigan Warriors Women's victory in the Women's Challenge Cup Final, Grace Banks and Jenna Foubister were celebrating with their teammates when they spotted the St Peter's group in the crowd. Despite media commitments and requests from both the BBC and Wigan Warriors' media team, they came straight over to our students with the Challenge Cup trophy and asked to have a photograph taken with them.
Jenna had just been named Player of the Match in the final, making the moment even more special. The players and staff were absolutely delighted, creating a memory that will stay with them for many years to come.
Everyone at St Peter's would like to congratulate the players, coaches, staff and families who have supported the team throughout this remarkable season. The boys have represented both the school and the wider community with pride, commitment and sportsmanship, and they thoroughly deserve their place in the history books.
National Champions. Wembley winners. An achievement to be proud of.
